Unfaithful As cheap as porn is and can be, porn flicks do bring up certain issues. And when I mean pornographic movies, I do not mean hardcore sex with animals or senseless banging on the bed or in the woods. As always, one must first try and understand the 'moral' issues of the adult industry. It has come to my attention that almost all porn sites have stated that the characters used in their cheap productions are age 18 and above. This clears the first moral dilemma; the girls/guys are no longer minors. Secondly, if you bother observing the actresses/actors of REALITY (its really ironic) porn, you'll soon come to realize that the girls actually appear in different sites. This dispels the second ethical issue - they're not forced into it (although there are those that do seem truly real and evil eg. Bang Bus etc, but majority are just little sets with good lighting and acoustics). Lastly, the adult industry pays one for their deeds and to those in it, its somewhat a fair trade off. In my opinion, there are different levels of pornography. For instance, on the most basic level, FHM and MAXIM can be considered soft porn. On the other extreme end, snuff porn is just evil. What falls in the remaining spectrum are artistic images (photographs, paintings, sculptures etc.) and RA movies (Fatal Attraction, Unfaithful etc.)  Having watched Unfaithful last night (it was the censored version, so I checked it out on the net), it sparked off a train of thought. I had begun to question the intention of the movie, the characters in real life and to a large extend marriage.Unfaithful is about Connie Summers (Diane Lane) who (as the title states) becomes unfaithful to her husband upon meeting a handsome French man. She knows its wrong to have an affair but continues it due to her lack of restraint. On the other hand, her husband Ed Summers (Richard Gere) loves her and when he finds out about her little secret, kills the lover, Paul Martel (Oliver Martinez) by accident. And the story continues... Adrian Lyne, the director of Unfaithful is characteristic in his focus on sexual characters. For simplicity, you can consider him a porn producer. And although he did get a nomination for Academy Award for Best Director for the film Fatal Attraction, many movie critics feel that his films lack substance. To a certain extend I do agree with that notion, as how good a director can one be if its just about sex? However, its in my opinion that because of his portrayal of sex and the sexuality of the characters that he was actually able to make the film a 'success'. The movie was able to capture the emotional turmoil of a woman in the midst of an affair. Though the acting was not superb, the setting and cinematography had helped to bring out the essence of the plot. The questions raised: 1) Why such a plot? Will it appeal to the masses? And on what basis will it be a hit, as a pornographic movie or one that has a proper message? 2) What are the consequences of the characters acting in such a film? 3) Adultery. Reality or fiction? ONE. It did appeal to me (not because I'm a horny little prick) but because there was a plot that seemed realistic. Its more common for shows to be about a husband straying from the marriage and then returning to it with the wife forgiving him. However, in this film, the plot was inverted. With Connie being the one who betrayed the vows, it became a lot more interesting. Also, the intelligent infusion of sex scenes into the plot had made the film realistic and 'understandable/relate-able'. Though there were scenes of nudity, what differentiated it from a truly pornographic movie was the plot. TWO. Another thought came to my mind when I found out that Diane Lane had a daughter. Would little Diane Lane suffer emotional trauma or be unable to deal with her mothers role in adult movies? How would she confront such issues when she becomes older? Imagine your mum bearing her breasts to the world in a film, how would you feel? Even now, I don't have a response to this question. But, I do feel that Diane Jr. maybe a victim of circumstances that she may never have wished to be born into. THREE. Being unfaithful is part of our everyday life. As mentioned in Blake's poem My Pretty Rose Tree, one must have restraint. Your eyes may stray, and your crotch may bulge, but your heart must never leave your lover's side. Connie was unable to treat her dirty deed as a fling and got further and further into it by allowing emotions to get involved. Adultery once was a sin punishable by death. Now, it all ends up in court with both parties becoming friends. Are marriage vows really that worthless in today's world of lust? Are people getting married for the right reasons? And lastly, do couples even know love? As widely as porn is viewed in Asia, pornography IS a taboo in our Asian culture. With Annabel Chong once shocking our little island paradise, are we ready for western influence? Give us another 20 years to find our true identity. Thursday, August 17, 2006

Long Live Mao Why do we need censorship laws? To protect our innocent little minds? For us to grow up all clean and pristine? The government has indeed succeeded in doing so. With all the laws on censorship and what not, porn is illegal and so are many other things. The intents of the MDA are purely beneficial for all. The masses are protected from what they deem as corruptive. However, who are those who say whats to stay and what isn't? The sages of the MDA decide. Whatever happened to the 'learn out of your classroom' policy? If you want us to learn, let us see the world.  Let us see all the breasts and penises we need to, all the blood and gore of war, all the pain and suffering that transcends the world. Authorities think that by painting a rosy world, we would be better off. This would hold true if we were all unthinking idiots, not knowing shit about things around us. But the painful truth is that we Singaporeans aren't. Although we're the kiasi, kiasu, kiazhenghu people of this sunny island, we do think. But when it comes to thinking, we think and stop, not daring to question convention. Here lies the question. What makes us stop?Call me a cynic, but yes its the government. It is he who rules who controls. Of course Singapore is a great city to live in (anyone who disagrees would be sent to the depths of Changi Prison). With crime rates as low as our interest rates and economic growth always positive, whats there to be unhappy about? For instance, during the 2006 elections that just passed, a friend said to me 'Why bother about the elections? Is there even a need to consider the opposition? The present government has given us all that we have. Just vote for them lah.' And yes, being practical is a distinct trait that all Singaporeans possess. And so, we knew the victors even before the results were announced - you just can't believe it can you? As an economist would say, everything comes at a cost. The opportunity cost of happiness, prosperity and progress is the next best alternative forgone – our freedom of expression and the freedom of being able to bask in another’s free expression. Are Singaporeans mature enough to have censorship laws removed? Honestly, we’re not. But if we never try to work towards a more liberal form of censorship, how can we ever enter the creative economy of the coming era? Its time we led a revolution. A revolution for a very different kind of freedom – intellectual freedom, the power for us to question and discern, to know whats good for us and not to allow the wise old farts of a committee to.
