You Never Truly Existed You are a little soul carrying around a corpse – Epictetus We were made to die, and die we will. ![]() In this short span of 100 years, we are created, worn down and eventually declared dead. Not long after this passing, we'll be forgotten. Herein lies the question that man has asked ever since the beginning. What then is the purpose of our existence? If we were born to die, and death were to mark the cessation of our existence, wouldn’t our life be completely futile? Some believe that our lives are predetermined. To a large extend, it holds true. For example, we can’t choose which household we’re born into can we? Some are born with silver spoons stuck in all orifices while others are not even left with a chip off the old disposable plastic spoon. And as much as we do want to believe that money doesn’t make the world go round, it does. Hence, how can the son of a rich tycoon be compared to that of a beggar’s on the street? The opportunities given and presented are just different and nothing can and nothing will change this given scenario. Hence, many just blame their ill fate and non-existent stars. The paradox about material wealth lies in man’s comparisons of riches. There will never come a point when an individual would say ‘I’m rich enough. I don’t need anymore money.’ The poor envy the rich and the rich envy their counterparts. On the contrary, emotional wealth is much simpler (yet in many cases more difficult for the masses) to attain. To bask in such pleasure would mean knowing what true happiness is. As hedonistic as man is, he has the innate power to control the amount of happiness and pleasure he needs in his life. The key to it all is contentment. For instance, a poor man can be satisfied with a simple meal of bread and water. However, if one were to offer this to the rich, this simple fanfare would be regarded as an act of insolence. So why the different response? It is in man’s nature to compare what he has to others who have better. However, in the case of the poor man, he has found true happiness by comparing what he had to what he may not have gotten in the first place. When one is able to count his blessings and not gripe about what he lacks, he has taken the first step into contentment. More often than not, man complains when he is most troubled. Rarely do we see the happy complain. It is when his life is in the pits that he begins to question the cosmos about his existence. He begins to believe that it would have been better to have not been born at all than have to suffer on earth. His question on existence sparks off a fierce debate within himself. By now, the link between happiness and existence should be relatively clear. When one is happy, his existence does not pose much bearing on himself, however, when he is down and out, his existence matters more than ever. So, think about it. If we were all happy (and I mean be truly happy, not take soma and screw around) our existence would be justified and thus not questioned. This is where man’s answer to his existence lies; it lies in the intangible contentment that the heart and soul provide, not the wealth of the rich. In all, our existence is justified by our happiness. So if you want to know why you were made, be content. But this can never occur because we are all irrational and stubborn. As such, we’ll never be happy; and because we’re never happy, we never truly existed. |
