The Wandering Wonder of Wonder. The concept of wonder is not to be defined. Should it be explainable in definite terms, wonder in itself will be destroyed. The simplest and most natural form of wonder is to be found in the innocence of a child. Without any from of knowledge, every occurrence to a child is fascinating. What is perceived is found to be natural and ordinary to the child. It is in this phenomenon that wonder is found – the child’s ability to not know and yet not question is true wonder. As man grows from infancy to maturity, wonder is lost to the world that he lives in. Logos, Ethos and Pathos develop in the individual, eroding his sense of creativity as he begins to question life in general. It is when his innocence is lost to the world of logic and rationale that he transcends into a new being, a disbeliever. A more knowledgeable and sensible person is no longer able to look at a floating man and not question how or why he is suspended in the air. He starts to rationalize the happening and attributes it to a lack of gravity or a possible spiritual possession. Soon, he starts to perceive everything from a single dimension. All reasons that he formulates slowly and painfully remove him from his initial state of innocence; soon, the cynic is born and wonder is forever lost. Though man can never escape the power of knowledge, he can retain his true being by occasionally detaching himself from reality. Reality the double-edged sword can lead man to both heaven and hell. Wonder is intrinsically human centric – or is it not? Monday, October 01, 2007
